Learn what blood pressure numbers mean and why monitoring them matters.
Blood pressure measures the force of blood pushing against the walls of your arteries. It is written as two numbers, such as 120/80.
The top number, called systolic pressure, measures the pressure when the heart beats.
The bottom number, called diastolic pressure, measures the pressure when the heart rests between beats.
Normal blood pressure is generally around 120/80, although individual targets may vary. Consistent readings above 130/80 may indicate high blood pressure.
High blood pressure is often called a “silent condition” because it usually has no symptoms. Regular monitoring helps identify potential problems early and allows you to take action before complications develop.
Checking your blood pressure during routine medical visits—or using a home monitor—can help you understand your personal baseline.
