Persistent chest pressure should never be ignored.
Severe chest pressure, tightness, or pain lasting more than a few minutes may indicate a serious heart problem.
Some people describe the sensation as:
• Pressure or squeezing in the chest
• A feeling of fullness or heaviness
• Pain that spreads to the shoulders, arms, neck, or jaw
Chest discomfort may come and go, but recurring pressure should always be evaluated by a medical professional.
It can be difficult to tell the difference between heart-related chest pain and other causes such as indigestion or muscle strain. When symptoms are unusual, persistent, or severe, it is safest to seek immediate care.
Emergency Action
If chest pressure lasts more than a few minutes or returns repeatedly, call 911 immediately.
